What is a BOP Stack?

A "BOP Stack" is a set or group of "blowout preventers" that are found on every oil and natural gas drilling rig as well as the oil and/or natural gas well

The BOP Stack controls the pressure within the the oil and/or natural gas well. The BOP stack is typically located below the rig floor and after the drilling rig is removed, is at the top of the well, frequently referred to as the "Christmas tree."

What are Blowout Preventers?

Blowout Preventers or "BOP" are large valves that can quickly seal off (at the surface wellhead) an oil or gas well that is being drilled or worked over.

During oil and natural gas well drilling, the BOP valve immediately closes if overpressure from an underground zone causes formation fluids (oil and natural gas) to enter the wellbore and threaten the safety of the workers on the rig or the rig itself.  By closing the BOP valve (via hydraulic actuators), the drilling crew can prevent explosive pressure release from the well, and once again control the downhole pressure of the well. BOP valves can be opened again once downhole pressure is under control. The BOP valve is located within the "BOP Stack."

Blowout Preventers have helped eliminate deaths, injuries and environmental disasters associated with oilwell "gushers."

What is Blowout Prevention?

Blowout prevention is an oil and gas technology that uses Blowout Preventers to prevent an oil or gas well from blowout.

What is a Casinghead?

In the oil and gas industry, the casinghead is located at the top of an oil and gas well and located between the first casing string and either the;

BOP stack (during drilling)

the wellhead (after drilling and completion).

This adapter may be threaded or welded onto the casing, and may have a flanged or clamped connection to match the BOP stack or wellhead.

What is "Drilling and Completion"?

In the Oil and Natural gas industry, drilling and completion, refers to the two-step processes of;

1. Drilling (and casing) the oil and/or natural gas well, and then

2. Completing the well, which immediately follows the drilling process.

The completion process includes the final steps of completing the well, including testing the well, selection of the valves and well's production equipment which then enable the well to begin production of oil and/or natural gas.

What is "Upstream Oil and Gas"?

The oil and natural gas industry is divided into three major segments:

The Upstream Oil and Gas segment is a term that refers to the searching, drilling and production of crude oil and natural gas. The Upstream Oil and Gas segment is also known as the "exploration and production" or "E&P" segment.

The Upstream Oil and Gas segment includes; exploring for potential underground (or underwater) oil and natural gas fields (or reservoirs), drilling of exploratory wells, and operating/producing the oil and natural gas wells that "pay" with crude oil and/or natural gas.

Support Domestic Oil and Gas production!

“spending hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars every year for oil, much of it from the Middle East, is just about the single stupidest thing that modern society could possibly do.  It’s very difficult to think of anything more idiotic than that.”
~ R. James Woolsey, Jr., former Director of the CIA

Price of Addiction
to Foreign Oil

According to R. James Woolsey, for Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, “The basic insight is to realize that global warming, the geopolitics of oil, and warfare in the Persian Gulf are not separate problems — they are aspects of a single problem, the West’s dependence on oil.”
